The process of recycling lithium-ion batteries typically involves the following key steps:
1. Collection and sorting: Batteries are collected from various sources and sorted based on chemistry and characteristics.

2. Discharging: Any remaining electricity is safely discharged, often by soaking the batteries in a brine solution.

3. Disassembly/Shredding: Batteries are partially disassembled and then shredded into small granules.

4. Separation: The shredded materials are separated into different components like plastics, metals, and "black mass" (containing valuable metals like cobalt, nickel, lithium, etc.).

5. Material recovery: There are three main approaches to recovering materials:

- Pyrometallurgy: Uses high temperatures (up to 1400°C) to extract metals like cobalt, nickel, and copper. However, this method is energy-intensive and produces hazardous emissions.

- Hydrometallurgy: Uses acids or solvents to leach metals from the batteries. This method is less energy-intensive but can generate sulfate waste.

- Electro-hydrometallurgy: Combines electrochemistry with hydrometallurgy for more efficient and environmentally friendly metal recovery.

6. Purification: The recovered materials are further processed and purified.

7. Reuse in manufacturing: The purified materials can be used to produce new lithium-ion batteries.
