Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) and Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) are two by-products from the palm oil industry that have significant potential as feedstocks for biodiesel production. Their utilization not only provides a low-cost alternative to traditional feedstocks but also contributes to waste management and environmental sustainability.
Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME)
POME is a waste product generated during the milling process of palm oil. It contains residual oil, organic matter, and other impurities. The high organic content and availability in large quantities make POME a viable feedstock for biodiesel production. Key points regarding POME include:
1. Pretreatment: POME requires pretreatment to recover residual oil, which can then be used for biodiesel production. This process typically involves methods like centrifugation, filtration, and chemical treatments to separate oil from the effluent.
2. Transesterification: The recovered oil from POME undergoes transesterification, a chemical process where triglycerides react with methanol or ethanol in the presence of a catalyst to produce biodiesel and glycerol. Supercritical transesterification, which does not require a catalyst, has been highlighted for its higher reaction rates and simpler product separation.
3. Optimization: To maximize biodiesel yield from POME, optimization of the transesterification parameters such as temperature, reaction time, and molar ratio of alcohol to oil is essential.
Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD)
PFAD is a by-product obtained during the refining of crude palm oil. It is rich in free fatty acids (FFAs) and is considered a low-cost feedstock for biodiesel production. Key points regarding PFAD include:
1. Composition and Availability: PFAD contains a high percentage of FFAs, making it suitable for biodiesel production through esterification and transesterification processes. It is available in significant quantities and is typically cheaper than refined palm oil.
2. Pretreatment: Due to its high FFA content, PFAD requires pretreatment through esterification to reduce the FFA levels before undergoing transesterification. This step is crucial to avoid soap formation and catalyst deactivation during the transesterification process.
3. Esterification and Transesterification: The esterification process converts FFAs into esters using an acid catalyst, followed by transesterification to produce biodiesel. This two-step process ensures high biodiesel yield and quality.
4. Industrial Application: PFAD has been successfully used in continuous large-scale biodiesel plants, demonstrating its feasibility and efficiency as a feedstock.

Myande’s Patented Biodiesel Technology Goes Into the Global Market
Recently, a methanol and water recovery facility designed and supplied by Myande to a client in Malaysia passed the acceptance tests and was put into operation. One prominent feature of this facility lies in low-carbon production process from used cooking oil (UCO) to biodiesel. Its successful completion indicates entry of Myande’s biodiesel technology into the global market. In addition to distillation of methanol and glycerin in the production line of transesterification and synthesis of biodiesel by enzymatic esterification, this facility is designed to recover methyl alcohol and glycerol from the wastewater of biodiesel plant so as to achieve full recovery and utilization of beneficial substance and obtaining distilled water that can be directly reused to the previous process section to achieve “zero-discharge of wastewater” from the biodiesel plant. In view of the different characteristics of two raw materials in the system, based on the comprehensive consideration of originality, progressiveness, stability, long-term operation cost and TCO (Total Cost Of Ownership), Myande technical team has innovatively developed a new type of treatment process and equipment after repeated discussions, and finally stood out in the competition with European suppliers, winning the bid for the project and the trust from the customer. At present, the new process has also successfully obtained the national patent. With the joint efforts of both parties, all commissioning indicators have achieved the anticipative target and requirement. Myande has not only created considerable extra operation profits for the customer, but also provided support for the customer to maintain technical advancement and retain its competitive edge in the industry. 2,000TPD Rapeseed Crushing Plant Launched
Recently, a 2,000 t/d rapeseed crushing plant built by Myande Group for Daodaoquan Grain and Oil Co., Ltd. started operation successfully and started to yield qualified rapeseed oil and meal. Daodaoquan Grain and Oil Co., Ltd. is a comprehensive oil processing enterprise integrating production, scientific research, trade, warehousing and logistics of edible vegetable oil and its related by-products. This new rapeseed crushing plant incorporates a wide range of Myande core equipment possessing independent intellectual property rights, including the E-type extractor, hydraulic flaker, DTDC, conditioner, and other key equipment. To achieve flexible material incoming and discharging, Myande CCJL series sweep auger and CQJL series reclaimer are used. In addition, advanced energy-saving technology, negative pressure draining technology and intelligent safety technology are used to ensure the stable operation of the entire production line and excellent product index. With the concept of "creating the best performance for our customers", Myande cooperates with DaoDaoQuan to build a modern, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly factory.
600,000 T/A Wheat Starch Deep Processing Project Successfully Launched
Recently, the 1st phase of Henan Hanyong's 600,000 tons (annual output) wheat starch deep processing project, designed by and installed under the guidance of Myande, has been smoothly commissioned, and contract for the 2nd phase was signed with Myande, marking the further extension of the domestic wheat deep processing industry chain. Henan Hanyong Biotechnology Co., Ltd. is one of the leading enterprises in agricultural industrialization of Henan province. It mainly produces edible alcohol with strong competitiveness and a high reputation in the market. Starch deep processing is one of Myande’s important business segments. After years of technology and experience accumulation in the field of starch deep processing, Myande has formed a complete set of production design system with a high degree of automation, stable operation and high product quality. In recent years, Myande has successfully established long-term strategic cooperative relations with multiple famous domestic and international enterprises. Combining with Hanyong's own industrial advantages, after in-depth research, efficient communication and repeated demonstrations, Myande has designed a set of production plan (as shown in the following figure) specially for the customer, and it can not only produce gluten and wheat starch, but also make better use of the mixed nutrient solution of process water and pentosan to produce alcohol, which will bring considerable economic benefits. The 1st phase project is a 500tpd wheat flour processing project, including a 3tpd gluten drying system and a 12tpd starch drying system. From beginning to end, the whole project lasted for 10 months. During the whole implementation process, from the plant layout planning, process design, intelligent automation design in the early stage, project service in the mid-term, to the installation, commissioning and training in the post stage, Myande’s rigorous, attentive and efficient one-stop service has won the unanimous praise of Hanyong. Through the joint efforts of Myande and Hanyong employees, a brand-new starch deep processing production line was successfully commissioned and started running smoothly, and all indicators were superior to the technical level of the same industry. In view of the pleasant cooperation in the 1st phase, Hanyong decided to cooperate with Myande again to expand its wheat starch deep processing output, and signed the 2nd phase project with Myande resolutely, namely 5t/d gluten drying system and 20t/h starch drying system. After which, Hanyong will become a high-quality gluten high-value conversion base with "the largest scale, the best environment protection and the highest level of research and development" in the industry in Asia.
